A probiotic paired with a Chinese herbal capsule improved constipation in Parkinson's patients — with shifts in gut bacteria linked to the benefit, but the study combined both treatments so the probiotic's solo effect is unclear.

This is the first trial testing this specific combination, so while the results are promising for people with Parkinson's disease and constipation, they do not apply to the general public or tell us whether the probiotic works on its own.

In 105 Parkinson's patients with constipation, adding Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis to a standard herbal capsule led to greater improvement in constipation than the capsule alone, and the benefit was associated with restoration of several bacterial groups. Because the probiotic was never tested by itself against placebo, we can't say how much of the effect is due to the probiotic versus the combination — and the study didn't report whether stool consistency improved significantly on its own.

Where this fits in the evidence

This is among the first studies we've indexed on Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis for Improved Constipation — treat it as an early signal until more research accumulates.
