1 g/day fish oil reduced a key inflammation marker by 24% in older adults — but 2 g and 4 g doses got no extra benefit.

This is one of the first rigorous human trials to test low-dose fish oil on vessel-wall inflammation, but a single study in elders — even a good one — can't yet settle the dose question or prove clinical impact.

In a 12-week trial of 240 middle-aged and older adults, only the lowest tested dose of fish oil (1 g/day) significantly lowered ICAM-1, a protein involved in immune cell adhesion to blood vessel walls, compared to placebo. Higher doses showed no additional effect, and fish oil did not improve several other measures of vascular function like nitric oxide production or blood vessel dilation.
