Big effect
A strain of Lactobacillus rhamnosus lowered fasting blood glucose in type 2 diabetes patients — but the striking effect came in people already on medication.
This is among the first controlled trials for this specific probiotic strain on blood sugar, and while the result is statistically robust, the benefit has only been shown in people with type 2 diabetes who are also taking standard hypoglycemic drugs.
In a 12-week trial, people with type 2 diabetes who added the probiotic LRa05 to their usual medication saw a statistically significant drop in fasting blood glucose compared to those on placebo. The same study also found improvements in HDL cholesterol and a shift in gut bacteria — but the findings may not apply to people without diabetes or those not already on medication.
Where this fits in the evidence
This is among the first studies we've indexed on Lactobacillus rhamnosus LRa05 for Improved Fasting Glucose Levels — treat it as an early signal until more research accumulates.
