Myth-buster

Turmeric matched corticosteroids for oral lichen planus lesions — but a closer look shows no statistical edge at most time points.

This meta-analysis suggests curcumin may be a reasonable alternative to standard steroid treatment for oral lichen planus, but the evidence is still thin and conflicting — the study found no significant difference in clinical lesion improvement across follow-ups, and pain reduction was also not significant.

For people with symptomatic oral lichen planus (painful, inflamed patches inside the mouth), a new meta-analysis found that curcumin (from turmeric) worked about as well as corticosteroid drugs at improving the appearance of lesions — but the key catch is that the difference between the two treatments was not statistically significant at most time points. Pain relief was also not significantly different between groups. Because this is one of the first systematic reviews on this specific comparison and the studies it analyzed have methodological limits, these results should be seen as promising but far from conclusive.
