Geranium

Safety profile

3 studies reporting safety data

Across 3 clinical studies, no specific adverse events were quantitatively associated with geranium (Pelargonium sidoides) extract. One study reported no significant difference in overall adverse event rates compared to placebo (RR, 1.06; 95% CI, 0.42-2.66; P = .9), and two studies described the extract as generally well tolerated, with one noting that adverse events were more common but none were serious. The evidence is based on studies evaluating geranium for respiratory tract infections, and no increased risk of any specific adverse event was identified.

Caveats: Limited evidence base (3 clinical studies); absence of reported adverse events does not establish long-term safety. Studies were likely powered for efficacy, not safety, so rare or delayed adverse events may not be detected.
