Notoginseng

Safety profile

3 studies reporting safety data1 serious adverse event

Across 3 clinical studies, no increased risk of adverse events was associated with notoginseng compared to controls. The most detailed report found no significant differences in bleeding, gastrointestinal side effects, or urticaria, and one large study noted similar rates of serious adverse events between notoginseng and control groups (1.0% vs 1.1%, p = 0.85). Overall, notoginseng was described as well tolerated in the available trials, with no statistically significant safety signals identified.

Caveats: Evidence is limited to short-term clinical studies; long-term safety has not been established. The number of studies reporting safety data is small, and most were powered for efficacy rather than safety, so rare adverse events may not have been detected.
