Evidence-Based Supplement Research

Luís Abrunhosa holds a degree in Biology from the University of Aveiro (1998), a Master's degree in Biotechnology/Bioprocess Engineering from the University of Minho (2001) and a PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering (knowledge area of Food Technology) (2008). Presently, he is a tenure Assistant Researcher at the Centre of Biological Engineering of the University of Minho. His main research expertise is in the field of mycotoxicology, and over the years he has developed work on the biodegradation, detoxification, and adsorption of mycotoxins using enzymes, microorganisms, and adsorbent materials, as well as on the development of novel HPLC analytical methods for the determination of mycotoxins in different types of matrices. His current scientific output includes 65 papers, 1 book of abstracts, 2 book chapters, and 1 patent. He has an h-index of 33 and 3512 citations. He has supervised 14 MSc students and 3 PhD students, and currently supervises 1 MSc student and 2 PhD students. He has been the principal investigator of the projects “New bio-strategies for the detoxification of mycotoxins using lactic acid bacteria” (PTDC/AGR-TEC/3900/2012) and “Novel protein-based affinity platform for mycotoxins clean-up” (ref. 2022.03438.PTDC), both funded by FCT. He is also the local PI of the European project “PROTEIN4IMPACT - Impact of Alternative Protein Sources to Improve Nutrition”, funded by HORIZON-REA, where he is developing fermentation strategies to produce mycoprotein from agro-industrial by-products.
