Evidence-Based Supplement Research

Professor Eri's PhD was awarded in 2001 from the University of Queensland. He immediately joined the IBD genetics laboratory headed by Dr Graham Radford-Smith where he worked for the next 2 years. His tenure yielded 2 papers, with the first description of CCRδ32 polymorphism in IBD cited over 70 times. His next post-doctoral work in mucosal immunology area was conducted at Cedars-Sinai IBD cntre and UCLA, USA where he was trained in multiple mouse models of IBD. From this position he produced 7 papers, with one paper (Am J Physiol) being cited over 370 times. Upon his return to Australia, he worked with Prof. Michael McGukin and Prof. Tim Florin as Senior Research Officer at the Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRI, now TRI, Brisbane). During this time he was chief investigator on 3 NHMRC (one as CIA, 2 as CIB/E) and 1 Qld Cancer Fund applications (total funding $1.3 million & 9 research papers). In 2008, his ground breaking work placed ER stress at the centre of the pathogenesis of IBD (First authored PLoS Medicine IF~17 paper; over 1000 citations so far). Independent career: Since 2011, Dr Eri has established an independent laboratory at UTAS. Even as a 50:30:20 academic at UTAS, he has maintained a very productive research career as evidenced by publications (26 ~50% as last author), grants (6~ $300,000) and graduate students (5, all with scholarship) Professor Rajaraman Eri has expertise in multiple mouse models, pre-clinical testing, immune cell isolation, organoid cultures and multi-organ histopathology and physiology. Eri is an active researcher with an international reputation in the field of mucosal immunology, chronic gut inflammation, and utilisation of preclinical models for health and microbiome (67 publications since 2018). These publications focus on the utilisation of techniques and methods pertinent to the proposed research to validate the efficacy of biologicals and small molecule inhibitors. The Advanced Gut Health and Chronic Inflammation Group led by the Eri has consistently ranked among the top 5% in the field over the past five years by its research outputs, with more than 100 research publications mostly in Q1 journals, and frequent invited presentations at premier conferences (3-5 per year). Over the past 10 years, Prof Eri has mentored 21 PhD students, 3 postdocs and junior colleagues. He has successfully led multidisciplinary teams with national and international collaborators, which resulted in the timely completion of 15 research projects funded by NHMRC, Cancer Councils and other organisations.
