Evidence-Based Supplement Research

Dr Raquel Revuelta Iniesta is a registered dietitian, Senior Lecturer in Nutrition, and leading researcher in paediatric oncology nutrition, vitamin D, and applied clinical nutrition. She graduated in Dietetics in 2011 and was awarded a prestigious summer studentship from the Society for Endocrinology to investigate the potential cardiovascular benefits of chlorogenic acid–rich green coffee. She completed her PhD in 2014 at Queen Margaret University (QMU), in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Edinburgh), and Ninewells Hospital (Dundee). Her doctoral research explored the impact of cancer on the nutritional status of children and adolescents, identifying clinical and psychosocial factors contributing to nutritional decline. She also examined the use of complementary and alternative therapies and their effects on quality of life during treatment. During this time, she gained clinical experience in paediatric oncology dietetics, delivered international training in paediatric anthropometry, and taught infant feeding to medical students at the University of Edinburgh. From 2014 to 2020, Dr Revuelta Iniesta held a Lecturer position at QMU, where she taught undergraduate and postgraduate modules in research methods, nutrition statistics, and public health nutrition. She served as Programme Leader for both the MSc in Public Health and the BSc (Hons) Nutrition programmes, successfully leading curriculum validation and obtaining Association for Nutrition (AfN) accreditation. Her research has consistently focused on the nutritional care of children, teenagers, and young adults (CTYA), particularly in clinical populations. She has led projects developing and implementing nutritional standards for paediatric oncology patients at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, and secured funding to explore the effects of vitamin D on clinical and muscle health outcomes in healthy children. She has also investigated how knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions shape vitamin D status in adults and children. Current research projects investigate prehabilitation and rehabilitation using diet, physical activity and behaviour for CTYA during and after cancer treatment. Furthermore, she is investigating associations between lifestyle including diet and CVD in survivors of childhood cancer. Currently based at the University of Exeter, Dr Revuelta Iniesta is: Co-Lead of the NIHR Nutrition in Children, Teenagers, and Young Adults with Cancer network (UK) Member of the Steering Committee of the SIOP Nutrition Network Co-Lead of the SIOP Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Adolescents with Cancer in High-Income Countries In these leadership roles, she contributes to international research, education, and advocacy efforts aimed at improving evidence-based nutritional care across the cancer trajectory in paediatric and adolescent populations.
