Stephanie Heys is a Consultant Midwife with North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, Emergency Department Nurse with LUHFT and an NIHR Senior Research Leader, where she focuses on building research capacity and capability in underrepresented disciplines—particularly in urgent and emergency maternity and neonatal care. Her research explores inequalities in access, experience, and outcomes for women navigating NHS 111, 999 and UEC pathways during and after pregnancy. Stephanie is the Principal Investigator for an NIHR RfPB-funded study examining disparities in urgent and emergency care access among perinatal women and the associated maternal and neonatal outcomes. She also leads multiple workstreams across the North West region aimed at improving clinical pathways and access to care for women at increased risk of morbidity and mortality. She serves as an emerging research leader for the NIHR Maternal Health Inequalities Research Consortium, which is focused on addressing disparities in access, experience, and communication during the perinatal period. As part of this role, Stephanie is actively involved in national-level strategy and research delivery aligned with NHS priorities for reducing health inequalities. In addition to her clinical and research leadership, Stephanie holds an honorary clinical fellow role with The University of Liverpool and The University of Manchester and supervises both national and international PhD and doctoral-level students in applied health and maternal health research. Her commitment to research translation, prehospital maternity safety, and systems improvement is reflected in her appointment as one of the first MBRRACE-UK prehospital assessors, contributing to national confidential enquiries into maternal and neonatal deaths and severe morbidity.
