New evidence

In a 90-patient trial, adding collagenase to a standard procedure for cervical disc herniation boosted the 'excellent' pain relief rate from 75.6% to 93.3% — but the study is the first of its kind and the dose remains undisclosed.

This is the first randomized trial to test collagenase as an add-on to radiofrequency ablation and ozone for cervical disc herniation. While the results are striking, a single small study — especially one that doesn't specify the collagenase dose — cannot yet be taken as definitive. Replication in larger, more transparent trials is needed.

The study compared two treatments for cervical disc herniation: low-temperature plasma radiofrequency ablation plus ozone injection, with or without added collagenase. After six months, 93.3% of patients who received collagenase reported excellent pain relief and functional recovery, versus 75.6% in the control group. However, because this is the first trial on this specific combination and the collagenase dose was not reported, the findings should be considered preliminary.

Where this fits in the evidence

This is among the first studies we've indexed on Collagenase for Reduced Pain Severity — treat it as an early signal until more research accumulates.

The study

Efficacy and safety of low-temperature plasma radiofrequency ablation combined with ozone injection versus triple therapy including collagenase for cervical disc herniation: a randomized controlled trial.
