Identifying Probiotic Brands with Double-Blind, Peer-Reviewed Studies

Explore prominent probiotic brands like Align, Culturelle, VSL#3, Florastor, and Yakult, known for conducting double-blind, peer-reviewed studies that demonstrate the positive health impacts of their products. Learn about the challenges in finding rigorously tested probiotics.

  • Probiotic brands with double blind studies?
Are there any brands of probiotics that have peer-reviewed double-blind studies proving positive health impacts?

Most (all?) prominent brands have information on their sites about the bacterial strands they include and what their potential health benefits are. That's fine, but I can't find one where the company invested in an actual study proving health benefits of their product.

This is even the case for Bened's Neuralli MP, which the company says may positively impact conditions like Parkinson's. The one study on their website on Parkinson's was single arm, open label (see below). https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/nutrition/articles/10.3389/fnut.2021.650053/full

  • Finding probiotic brands that have conducted double-blind, peer-reviewed studies to demonstrate positive health impacts of their products can be quite challenging. While many prominent brands provide extensive information about the bacterial strains they use and the potential benefits of these strains, rigorous, company-sponsored clinical trials are less common. Here are a few probiotic brands known to have engaged in peer-reviewed, double-blind studies:

    1. Align: This brand has been specifically studied for its Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis 35624 strain, with research showing benefits for digestive health.

    2. Culturelle: Known for its use of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Culturelle has several studies supporting its efficacy in gastrointestinal health and immune support.

    3. VSL#3: This multi-strain probiotic has been the subject of numerous double-blind studies, particularly focusing on its effects in managing gastrointestinal disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC).

    4. Florastor: Containing Saccharomyces boulardii, Florastor has undergone various studies highlighting its utility in reducing the incidence of Clostridium difficile infections and improving gut health.

    5. Yakult: This brand, containing Lactobacillus casei Shirota, has been extensively researched, with double-blind studies demonstrating its impact on immune function and gastrointestinal health.

It's important to note that while these brands have studies supporting some health benefits, probiotics can have different effects based on the individual and the specific strain used. If you are looking for a specific health benefit, it may be beneficial to review the individual studies related to each product.
