A user experiences unusual mental effects after consuming sauerkraut. The discussion explores potential causes such as histamine sensitivity, gut-brain axis interactions, and detox reactions. Advice includes gradual introduction of probiotics and consulting healthcare professionals for persistent issues.
Sauerkraut side effects?
Recently bought some kraut to help replenish my bacteria from a long time of abusing it. So i tried a couple spoonfuls and at first I was so happy, talkative and feeling really good, then like 10 mins later my mind started racing like crazy, when i was driving 45mph felt like 90mph, felt like i was tripping and it felt like I was on somethin i guess like a mix between speed and weed, and i got really weird thoughts. Any idea why and is this normal?
Sauerkraut is a type of fermented food rich in probiotics, which are beneficial for gut health. Probiotics can help restore the natural balance of gut bacteria and may have various health benefits1. However, consuming sauerkraut or other probiotic-rich foods can have certain side effects, especially if your body is not used to them.
Here are some potential side effects and explanations for what you experienced:
-
Gut Microbiota Changes: Introducing a significant amount of probiotics can alter the gut microbiome composition rapidly. This can lead to digestive symptoms like gas, bloating, or changes in bowel movements as your body adjusts.
-
Histamine Reaction: Some fermented foods, including sauerkraut, contain histamines, which can, in some individuals, contribute to feelings of dizziness, headaches, or a feeling similar to mild intoxication. If you are sensitive to histamines, this might explain your reaction.
-
Psychoactive Effects: Although not common, significant changes in gut bacteria can potentially influence mood and cognitive functions, partly due to the gut-brain axis. This influence could possibly explain the racing thoughts and altered perception of speed.
-
Detox Reaction: Known as "Herxheimer Reaction" or "die-off" effect, this can occur when the probiotics start outcompeting harmful bacteria, releasing toxins as those bacteria die. This might contribute to flu-like symptoms or feelings of restlessness.
-
Individual Sensitivity: Each person's body reacts differently to dietary changes, especially dramatic ones. Your body might have had an unexpected reaction to the sauerkraut due to various reasons, including pre-existing conditions or metabolic sensitivities.
It is essential to start with small amounts of fermented foods and gradually increase the intake to allow your digestive system to adapt. If the symptoms persist or are severe, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any specific allergies or underlying conditions that may be contributing to these reactions.
