Sandri Giuseppina was born in 1975 and she is married with three sons. The research activity of Dr. Sandri has been developed in the fields of Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology and has been focused on the following research subjects: -Development of therapeutic systems for administration routes other than the oral one, (in particular buccal and vaginal) intended to increase the bioavailability of hydrophilic poor absorbable drugs. She evaluated the mucoadhesion and penetration enhancement properties (with an ex vivo approach) of new chitosan derivative (TMC, MPC, depolymerized chitosan, reacetylated chitosan) in comparison with chitosan hydrochloride and hyaluronic acid). Moreover she developed thermosensitive gels based on chitosan hydrochloride and its derivatives (TMC and MPC) and films and matrixes based on chitosan and polyacrylic acid as mixtures. -Development of mucoadhesive eyedrops, semisolid formulations and colloidal systems (polymeric nanoparticles and micelles; SLN) for ophthalmic application to deliver poor soluble and poor absorbable drugs across cornea such as cyclosporine A. At present she is involved in the evaluation of penetration enhancement properties and biocompatibility and citotoxicity of colloidal systems using rabbit cornea epithelial cells (RCE cells). -Development of polymeric nanoparticles and SLN for oral administration of proteic drugs. The penetration enhancement properties and biocompatibility and citotoxicity have been investigated using Caco-2 cells. At present she is involved in the development of drug delivery systems for hemoderivatives to treat chronic lesions (mucositis skin ulcers). Currently she focuses her attention on the development of therapeutic systems for tissue engineering and in particular scaffolds for skin and tendon regeneration. Moreover she cooperated at research projects joined with foreign research groups: University of Ege, Turkey and University of Granada, Spain, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil and research projects founded by pharmaceutical company. Those projects were finalized with joint research papers and oral and poster presentations at international and national congresses. She serves asreviewer for serveral scientific journals and for NRF (National Research Foundation) South Africa, MIUR PRIN projects (Projects for National Interest Research), for National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH), Budapest, Ungneria and she is in the following Editorial Committees: Member of Editorial Advisory Board of Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences; Member of Editorial Bord of Polymers (MDPI). She has been awarded with: 1)“Premio Actimex” for the best poster in “Reaearch and Development area” with the oral presentation of the poster entitled “Valutazione di derivati del chitosano come promotori di assorbimento transmucosale", G. Sandri, S. Rossi, F. Ferrari, M.C. Bonferoni, R.A.A. Muzzarelli, C. Caramella, 42° Simposio AFI, Perugia, 29-31 Maggio 2002; 2) Award for the best poster in “Reaearch and Development area” with the oral presentation of the poster entitled: "Chitosan and trimethylchitosan as buccal penetration enhancers: a morphological investigation", G. Sandri, P. Poggi, M.C. Bonferoni, S. Rossi, F. Ferrari,Y. Zambito, C. Caramella, 45° Simposio AFI, Rimini, 15-17 Giugno 2005; 3) Travel Grant of "Controlled Release Society" (CRS) to attend to "33th Annual Meeting and Exhibition", 22-26 Luglio 2006, Austria Center, Vienna Austria; 4) "Most cited paper 2004 Award" of Elsevier, for the paper entitled "Assessment of chitosan derivatives as buccal and vaginal penetration enhancers", G. Sandri, S. Rossi, F. Ferrari, M.C. Bonferoni, C. Muzzarelli, C. Caramella, Eur.J. Pharm. Sci. 21 (2004), 351 – 359; 5) Best poster award, 4th AItUN Annual Meeting, Innovation in Pharmaceutics: "a glimpse" in Biotech world, Napoli, 26-27 February, 2010 Pag 78-79;6) "Best paper award" of "J. Drug Deliv. Sci. Technol." for the paper entitled "Comparison of functional and biological properties of chitosan and hyaluronic acid, to be used for the treatment of mucositis in cancer", J. Drug Deliv. Sci. Technol., 2011, 21, 241-247.
