Prof Santhosh Pillai, is a Professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science, Durban University of Technology. Prof Pillai was rated C2 as an Established Researcher by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa in 2022 for his research contributions. Among his current research interests are bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass to bioenergy and other value-added products (biohydrogen, bioethanol, biobutanol, oligosaccharides, animal feed); Valorisation of proteins and peptides from aquatic biomass; Microorganisms, their enzymes & metabolites for bioremediation and other industrial applications; Microorganisms and their enzyme systems in the degradation of synthetic plastics; Biological control of microorganisms for food and feed preservation etc. He is also involved in student capacity development and graduated with 3 PhD and 10 Masters students and supervised 3 Postdoctoral Fellows. Currently, Prof Pillai is supervising 8 PhD, 8 Masters and three Postdoctoral Fellows. He is also involved in collaborations with researchers from the National [Agricultural Research Council (ARC); National Institute For Communicable Diseases (NICD), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)] and International (Brazil, China, India, Russia, USA) institutions. He has published several articles in peer-reviewed ISI journals, contributed to book chapters and presented at various national and international conferences. He is also a reviewer for several international journals and academic institutions both in South Africa and abroad and the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa.
