Across 3 studies, 1 reported a beneficial small effect on lumbar spine bone mineral density in older men, while 2 reported neutral small effects. The beneficial study used 2000 IU/day over a median of 1095 days (3 years) in generally healthy adults aged ≥70. The neutral studies included a meta-analysis in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and a meta-analysis of high-dose (100,000 IU) vitamin D in older adults. Overall, evidence is mixed, with a small beneficial effect limited to a specific subgroup.
