Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a severe, inherited muscle disorder predominantly affecting boys, characterized by a defect in the gene for the muscle protein dystrophin, leading to progressive muscle wasting and weakness that typically begins around age four and results in loss of the ability to walk by age 12. DMD commonly causes muscle enlargement due to fat accumulation, scoliosis, and can be associated with intellectual disability, with female carriers showing mild symptoms.
